The Kingston Flyer is New Zealand's famous vintage steam train, based in Kingston, Otago (approximately 40 minutes drive south from Queenstown) on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand's South Island. The Kingston Flyer has a history that spans over 120 years. Set in spectacular mountain scenery, the train is a splendid example of New Zealands heavy engineering skills and is now one of the more unique leisure attractions. The original Kingston Flyer was a passenger service that operated between Kingston and the Main South Line at Gore until the mid 1950s. Today the Kingston Flyer operates on a 14km stretch of track between Kingston and Fairlight. It is a wonderfully memorable journey that will relax and fascinate you as you travel in the luxury of a bygone era.

The train consists of seven steam heated wooden vintage carriages all dating around the turn of the century - the oldest being the Gallery, or Birdcage, carriage built in 1898.

Today the coal fired railway engine - Kingston Flyer consists of: Two AB Pacific Class steam locomotives (N.Z built) Locomotive AB 795 dating 1927 was a former Royal Train.

The 'Kingston Flyer' is a must for fans of old steam trains. This tourist vacation attraction can also be hired out for travel conferences, chartered trips or family holiday fun.

OPERATING SCHEDULE

The Kingston Flyer operates two daily excursions between Kingston and Fairlight from the
1st of October until 30th April annually ( Closed Christmas Day ).

You can take a return journey or a one-way trip in either direction.
